MARIANA ZVETKOVA
Born and raised in Bulgaria, soprano Mariana Zvetkova began her career singing the lead roles in Il Trovatore, Aida, and Tannhäuser. Her international career has taken her to La Scala, Munich State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Tokyo National Theater, Lyon National Orchestra, Radio France, Semper Oper in Dresden, and Teatro Minicipal in Rio de Janeiro among others. She has worked alongside acclaimed conductors and stage directors such as Giuseppe Sinopoli, Willie Anthony Waters, Stefan Soltez, Ivan Torcz, Imre Pallo, Emil Tabakov, Eugenie Svetlanov, Nayden Todorov, Johanes Schaaf, Plamen Kartaloff, Hugo de Ana, Luca Ronconi, Phillip Arlaud, Paul Curran, Peter Konvichni, Vera Nemirova.
Under the baton of Maestro Giuseppe Sinopoli, Zvetkova recorded Dvorak’s Stabat Mater with Deutsche Gramophone, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2002. She has also recorded Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Radio France conducted by Eugenie Svetlanov, excerpts from Rachmaninoff’s Francesca da Rimini and Aleko with Naxos Records, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with Radio Sofia Orchestra, conducted by Nayden Todorov.
Among the many competitions Zvetkova has participated in, she won The Grand Prix of The International Competition in Toulouse in 1998, A Laureate at the Queen Elisabeth Voice Competition in Brussels in 1996 and 2nd Prize at The Puccini Foundation Competition in New York City in 1999. She has also received numerous grants and awards in the United States from the Olga Forrai Foundation, The Singers Development Foundation, The Gerda Lissner Foundation, The Sullivan Foundation, The Crystal Lira for her achievements as Brünnhilde in the first Bulgarian Production of Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner (2013) and Distinguished Achievement Award from The Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation (2016).
Her repertoire includes the roles of Tosca, Turandot, Manon Lescaut, Maddalena (Andrea Chenier), Amelia (Un ballo in maschera), Aida, Lady Macbeth, Leonora (Il Trovatore), Elisabeth (Don Carlos), Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos), Elisabeth (Tannhäuser), Senta (Der Fliegende Holländer), Brünnhilde (Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung), Ortrude (Lohengrin), Santuzza (Cavalleria Rusticana) and Leonora (Fidelio).
For the last six years she has been successfully performing some roles from the mezzo-soprano repertoire as: Fricka from “Das Rheingold” and “Die Walküre”, Ortrude from “Lohengrin” (Richard Wagner), Clytemnestra from “Elektra” (Richard Strauss), The Composer from “Ariadne auf Naxos” (R. Strauss), Amneris from “Aida”( G.Verdi), Frugola from “Il Tabarro” (G. Puccini).
Zvetkova holds degrees from the National Academy of Music in Bulgaria, Indiana University and PhD in Music at NBU. She has studied professionally with Boris Christoff at The Academy of Arts and Culture in Rome and Martina Arroyo at Indiana University.
Since 2003 Mariana Zvetkova has been Vice-President of the Martina Arroyo Foundation in New York City.
